Individual Reflection – Big Five Personality Test
After taking the Big Five Personality Test I’ve concluded that it is a fairly accurate assessment of my personality. 1) On Openness to Experience/Intellect I ranked at the 53 percentile, with the description that I don’t typically seek out new experiences. I would agree with this assessment. While I am somewhat creative, I am no artist. It takes me more time to do something creative than something analytical, but I do still like to be creative on occasion.
2) On Conscientiousness, I rank very high – 86%. I also agree with this placement. I am well-organized and reliable. I feel that this part of my personality weighs down my openness to new experiences above. I’m very careful and calculated, taking care to get things right. 3) In Extraversion I ranked very low at just 7 percent. This is probably an accurate depiction, but if you asked most people who know me they wouldn’t rank me that low. I am a quiet, thoughtful person and I prefer small groups to large crowds. I am perfectly happy spending quiet time on my own. I actually work very hard at being more outgoing and forcing myself to talk to people in social situations where I would feel more comfortable melding into the background.
4) With Agreeableness I ranked at 83% with the description of good-natured, courteous and supportive. Being my agreeable self, I agree with this assessment. I have a natural affinity for empathy and sympathizing with others. 5) In Neuroticism I ranked at 37% - generally relaxed. This is also accurate. I would probably rank lower if it weren’t for being a worry wart, which is linked to my high conscientiousness. People often comment on how easy-going I am, but if they could see what goes on underneath the surface at times, they’d be very surprised at how well I keep a level head.
I feel that my combination of personality traits make me a good follower and a good leader. As a leader, my mid-level openness to new experiences keeps me from taking large risks, but also keeps me open to opportunities as they appear. My high conscientiousness helps me to put others and the organization ahead of myself. A leader doesn’t have to be well-organized, but they must be dependable and accountable. My low level of Extraversion helps me to be a good listener. People don’t have to worry that I’m just waiting for my turn to talk. I listen well, as I mentioned in my week 2 discussion post, this includes being attentive to body language and mood. Being a good listener is important for both leaders and followers. As a leader, my high level of agreeableness makes me approachable to followers, as well as supportive and sympathetic. This also aids in being a good listener and makes for a higher level of patience. A lower level of neuroticism is good for everyone. During my readings at the University of Phoenix, I arrived at discovering learning styles and how understanding your own style can be the key to grasping control of a successful education. The process of which touched on the subject of self-awareness and how assessment tests could help you to reach the level of understanding needed. In chapter 2 of "Keys to College Studying: Becoming a Lifelong Leaner" (Bishop & Carter & Kravits, 2002), it was stated that, "Many different kinds of assessments give people a method of self-discovery, providing different means of exploring strengths and weaknesses, abilities and limitations." (p29). After completing a couple of assessments as covered in the chapter, I found myself to have a logical and adventurer personality style with strengths in being skillful in a variety of fields that make use of my abilities to organize materials logically, explain things in sequential order, analyzing information, and hands-on problem solving to name a few. These strengths are not only evident in my line of work as a welder, but in the way I live my personal life and the way I interact in with my learning team members.

Along the lines of an old commonly known clich & eacute;, for every positive there is a negative, I learned that just as I have good personal strengths, there are as well weaknesses to bare. "Human strengths are as real as human weakness, so say history and science." (Lopez, 2003, p. 5). Among my weak points are the lack of being musically talented, sociable, and even though being skillful in various fields can be a strength, there is a high sense of pride from doing good quality work, that if not controlled could feed an ego rush that may rub off the wrong way for some people. In addition, while there are strengths to being an adventurer personality type with a desire to be involved in an action-packed environment that is on the constant go with a taste for the variety of things that can be done.
